Web Design Mistakes To Avoid

You might be a little intimidated by the prospect of designing a website for your own company, especially if you have not done it before. You want to make your company look as professional as possible and to get across to prospective customers relevant information that is likely to turn them into paying customers. Your website’s appearance and feel is not something that should be overlooked or taken lightly, as this is the first point of contact between you and your potential clients, and you want to impart a feeling of competent professionalism. What follows is what you must consider when telling a web design agency what you want / expect:

Try Not To Give Too Much Information - While you might want to give your customers whatever information you see fit, there is such a thing as too much information. Your homepage should only include the information that is most important to communicate to the visitor, such as who your company is, what you do or sell, and why the visitor should deal with you. If you have a lot of information that you want to give visitors to your site, you can use links from your homepage to other pages to avoid a cluttered look.

Text - As this is the primary information medium for most websites, getting this aspect perfectly right is vital. Black text with white backgrounds is the most popular and preferred formatting, but you can create any combination so long as there is a distinct contrast between the text and background. Fonts like Arial, Verdana, and Times New Roman are the recommended font styles as these are the most easily read styles on computer screens.

Pictures & Images - These are necessary as they can help pull an entire website together and give it a finished look. However, do not have more pictures than text information on any page as the focus should be on giving information and there is only so much information that you can give with. Taking pictures yourself is certainly the cheapest option but it is worth paying someone to take them for you, or buying them from an online stock photo website, as the difference in quality really will be noticeable.

Embedded music / video - While you may think that putting music or videos on your website will improve the quality, only in rare cases does this work. If either of these options are not essential to the your website, make them optional instead of having them coded to auto-play. Forcing visitors to do something, which is what you are doing if your auto-play music or videos, has been shown to be the a big factor in web users quickly deciding to leave a website.
